Since 2008 there have been 125 wrecks at the bridge of 11foot8.com fame. Thanks to a nearby camera, can’t-look-away footage of trucks crashing into the 11-foot, 8-inch train trestle in Durham, NC has been viewed by millions of people.
For the record, the structure that has “earned a reputation for its unrelenting enforcement of the laws of physics,” is a mere four inches shorter than Tacoma’s own “can opener.”
Meet our very own truck-cruncher, which is located just off Ruston Way.
Offering 12 feet of clearance (and not a skosh more), our bridge recently wrestled with a white box truck. Check out two photos of the wreck captured by Marissa Leone, a friend of Grit City Magazine…
Evidence of damage from this (and possibly previous) collisions remains readily visible where Ruston Way meets Alder Way.

Marissa, who happened to be passing by on a stroll, snapped the above photos of the truck vs. bridge showdown.
“Traffic wasn’t bad,” she told me, but “people were doing the slow-down-because-I-want-to-see-what-happened thing.”
Though no statistics on how many accidents have occurred at Tacoma’s “can opener” are readily available, we’re all ears if you happen upon one. Follow along on Instagram and Facebook for our latest, where you can also drop us a line.
